Hamilton’s food banks need your help

Hamilton food banks are facing a summertime shortage.

With many new families needing a hand up and kids being out of school for the summer, food banks are struggling to keep up with the ongoing demand.

Approximately 12,500 Hamiltonians visit a food bank each month. A third of those users are children under the age of 19.

The number of Hamilton food bank users increases each year. In this last year alone, the Good Shepherd saw an increase of over 400 families using their services.

While the shelves are not empty, supplies continue to deplete fast.

If you are in a position to donate, there are a few different ways you can help out your community.

Many food banks accept cash donations. Visit your local food bank’s website to get in touch with them about how to donate.

Some grocery stores have donation bins and pre-priced donation bags. Either you can pick and purchase your own non-perishable food items to donate, or you can purchase a pre-priced, pre-packed donation bag.

Contact your local food bank to find out what they currently need most. Whether it be monetary donations, food donations, or volunteer services, please help them to the best of your ability.

How else do you think Hamiltonians can help out their community? Let us know in the comments.
