Hamilton sign gets lit up tonight

After nearly a year of waiting, Hamilton’s light up sign will be unveiled tonight.

The city first announced the plans for the sign last summer as a project to celebrate Canada’s 150th anniversary.

The sign was fully funded by 12 private sector donations who each contributed $25,000 toward the $300,000 project.

Mock-ups of the sign were released earlier this year and were met with some criticism. The light up art piece, spelling out “HAMILTON” in large block letters, seemed too familiar to some Hamilton residents.

Similar signs have been seen across the world — people have posed with the Amsterdam sign for years, and most recently Toronto received a sign of their own in 2015.

The Hamilton sign has taken artistic cues from such cities, combining their best attributes in order to make a unique sign for the city. Unlike Toronto or Amsterdam, the letters on the Hamilton sign are hollow, allowing people to not only pose with the sign but step inside it.

This interactive art piece is sure to be a popular summer destination. Visitors and locals alike will have a great spot to take photos and show their love for Hamilton.

The official unveiling of the sign takes place tonight. The ceremony begins at 8:30 pm with the lighting happening at 9 pm.
