Activist killed while bearing witness to pigs bound for slaughter

Update: The activist has been identified as Regan Russell; a compassionate female activist in her 60s.

An activist has died after being struck by a livestock transport truck outside Fearmans Slaughterhouse in Burlington this morning, June 19th.

The female protester was reportedly giving water to the pigs when she was struck and trapped under the moving truck.

Halton Police are investigating the incident, which occurred at the intersection of Appleby Line and Harvester Road. Motorists are being asked to avoid the area.

This incident comes just one day after Ontario MPPs passed Bill 156, a bill which criminalizes animal rights activism, whistleblowing, and undercover investigations on farms.

The event, organized by Toronto Pig Save, is one of many vigils held outside the plant. According to Toronto Pig Save’s Facebook page, the weekly event’s purpose is to “bear witness” and “to see the reality, to connect, to document, and to expose a violent space.”

Toronto Pig Save and animal rights activists have a long history of protesting outside Fearmans slaughterhouse. In 2017, another activist was found not guilty of criminal mischief after giving water to the pigs.

Anybody with further information can call police at 905-825-4747 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
