Burlington politicians support mask bylaw in unanimous vote

A committee in Burlington voted 7-0 in favour of a bylaw that would require anyone in the city to wear a mask while visiting indoor public spaces.

The proposal still needs to be approved by city council on Monday, but the overwhelming support from members of the city’s corporate services, strategy, risk, and accountability committee is a positive move forward on Thursday.

Burlington’s draft bylaw says that a mask is any face covering that covers the nose, mouth, and chin. The bylaw would expire on September 30th unless it was extended.

People exempt from wearing a mask include children under three, those who can’t wear a mask because of breathing difficulties, medical conditions, or developmental disabilities. Masks also won’t be required during physical activity.

Support for a mandatory mask bylaw was brought forward by Burlington’s Mayor Marianne Meed Ward and Councillor Shawna Stolte earlier this week.

Temporary bylaws that require people to wear face coverings in public indoor spaces are becoming popular in Ontario municipalities. Hamilton is currently reviewing a similar bylaw.
