Fireworks start fire at City View Park in Burlington

The City of Burlington Fire Department was called to City View Park when two large grass fires were reported on Canada Day.

Fireworks are thought to be the cause of the fires after Halton Police received numerous complaints about displays being lit off in the area.

Although personal fireworks were permitted in Burlington over the holiday, the fire department strongly discouraged residents from lighting them off. The fire department said that large firework displays are a huge fire hazard, and stated a concern of large gatherings during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Hamilton banned the selling and lighting of fireworks during the current health crisis. The ban continues through until July 4th, 2020.

City council approved the temporary ban back in May in order to cover Victoria Day and Canada Day, the two major fireworks holidays in the city.

However, the ban didn’t deter some Hamilton residents from continuing their Canada Day fireworks traditions, with community members taking to social media to report numerous firework displays and parties in their neighbourhood.

One Twitter user said that the sky over Waterdown was being lit up by multiple firework displays.

Other users were calling out residents for totally ignoring the ban.

Hamilton and Burlington both decided to host virtual Canada Day celebrations in an effort to reduce public gatherings while physical distancing restrictions are still in place.
