Burlington’s newest public artwork pays tribute to Black Lives Matter

A mural has been installed on the sidewalk outside Burlington City Hall in support of the Black Lives Matter movement.

Painted by a local artist who wishes to remain anonymous, the mural was community funded and will remain in place until September 13th.

City staff and the Mayor gathered outside City Hall for the official unveiling on Sunday. Afterwards, Mayor Meed Ward took to social media to offer the option for residents to submit ideas for future artworks and ideas to further the city’s efforts to end racism.

Coun. Lisa Kearns posted to Twitter Saturday, writing that the mural is a symbol of making the world better, and that by listening to BIPOC community members, “together we can learn, heal, and stop racism of all kinds.”

This is the second time this summer that the city has paid tribute through art to a marginalized group. A rainbow crosswalk in support of the LGBTQ+ community was installed in downtown Burlington in June. Both pieces gathered crowds and have become popular places to take pictures.
