Burlington city councillors unanimously voted in favour of expanding the mandatory mask bylaw to include most common areas of condo and apartment buildings last week.
The new addition to the bylaw will come into effect August 20th and will be similar to the guidelines of the mandatory mask bylaw that was introduced in July.
At last night’s Special Meeting of Council, we unanimously approved an amendment to add the common elements in condos and apartments in the City of Burlington’s temporary mandatory mask bylaw. https://t.co/vsUa7jqzGA

Councillors also approved an extension to the temporary bylaw that will take its end date to January 31st, 2021. However, council has the option to end the bylaw before then, or extend it even further.
“We listened to our residents who have been requesting additional protections for public areas in condos and apartments. We need to use every tool we have to keep our community safe wherever they are,” said Burlington mayor Marianne Meed Ward.
“We also thank those buildings in our city who have already voluntarily asked residents to wear a mask in common areas.”
Exemptions from wearing a face covering in common areas of condo and apartment buildings are similar to those for individuals in public indoor spaces.
Those who cannot wear a mask for medical reasons and children under five years old are exempt from the bylaw.
As of right now, the mask bylaw still doesn’t enforce people wearing a face covering in childcare centres, schools, employee-only areas, and spaces that are not enclosed.
