Joaquin Phoenix appeared at a vigil for animal rights activist in Burlington

Academy Award-winning actor Joaquin Phoenix was spotted in Burlington on Friday appearing at a vigil for an animal rights activist that was struck and killed by a truck outside the Fearman’s Pork slaughterhouse last summer.

Phoenix joined other activists outside the slaughterhouse who gathered to pay their respects to Reagan Russell.

Back in June, Russell was feeding water to pigs that were in a transport trailer at the back of a truck when she was fatally struck by another vehicle.

The Oscar-winning star of Joker was spotted speaking with other activists and taking pictures while holding a sign that said “Fearman’s slaughterhouse showed me no mercy.”

As an outspoken environmental and animal rights advocate, Phoenix commented on the death of Russell in June and has been vocal about the problems with Bill 156 and the Ontario government.

The government’s Security from Trespass and Protecting Food Safety Act prohibits anyone from stopping, hindering, obstructing, or otherwise interfering with a vehicle transporting animals. Parts of the act came into effect in September.

Phoenix and other animal rights activists believe the bill affects their rights to hold peaceful protests.
