Burlington company wins funding to develop a new way of recycling textiles

The Minister of Environment and Climate Change, Jonathan Wilkinson, announced the four winners of the latest Canadian Plastics Innovation Challenge last week who are looking for a better way to recycle textiles; including Met-Tech Inc. in Burlington.

This is part of the Government of Canada’s action plan to achieve zero plastic waste by 2030, which includes a ban on single-use plastics.

Met-Tech Inc. will receive up to $150,000 toward developing their solutions to address plastic waste. Their plan includes developing a low-cost process to recycle more textile waste such as clothing.

“The Government of Canada is pleased to support made-in-Canada solutions to plastic waste and pollution. Small businesses are key partners in achieving Canada’s vision of a zero-plastic-waste future by 2030. By working together, we can create a cleaner future, while growing the economy and creating good jobs,” said Minister Wilkinson in a statement.

Canadians throw away about 3 million tonnes of plastic waste each year. This is the equivalent of throwing away about 570 full garbage bags every minute.

The Canadian Plastics Innovation Challenges are part of the Innovative Solutions Canada program. Innovative Solutions Canada has launched 15 plastics challenges so far, giving out almost $19 million to support Canadian innovators and small businesses.
