The City of Burlington broke the top 10 on North America’s Most Open Cities Index of 2020 that was published by Public Sector Digest.
Coming in at ninth, Burlington has been included on the index that identifies and ranks North American cities based on municipal open data initiatives.

The Index provides a way for local governments to evaluate the effectiveness of open data programs in their municipalities.
“The City of Burlington is committed to promoting transparency and accountability in government,” said Burlington Mayor Marianne Meed Ward.
“The Open Cities Index gives us the opportunity to measure how our data services rank amongst our peers and shows us where we can build and grow our open data programs to ensure it can be accessed and used effectively by the community and open data enthusiasts.”
A total of 41 organizations participated in the 2020 edition of the open data index with 18 Canadian municipalities represented in the top 20.
The Open Cities Index measures the readiness, implementation, and impact of participating cities’ open data initiatives.
A new data set was included in the 2020 edition that looked closer at how municipalities provided COVID-19 related information and data.
