Burlington’s Ribfest will be a drive-thru event this year

It’s safe to say that 2020 is basically a write-off for large public events. Major local festivals, like Supercrawl, Collective Arts Fest, and Because Beer have all been heartbreakingly, albeit understandably, cancelled due to ongoing concerns with the COVID-19 pandemic.
However, there’s a small silver lining. Burlington’s annual Ribfest, a 24-year-old, sweet and smoky summer staple that typically happens on Labour Day weekend, won’t be cancelled this year after all; though, it will look pretty different than usual.
Though Burlington’s Ribfest was originally cancelled due to COVID-19, the festival has bounced back with a physically-distanced drive-thru model so locals can still get their fix of delicious, award-winning ribs and summery barbeque staples.
Hosted by Rotary Burlington-Lakeshore, this year’s drive-thru Ribfest – normally hosted in Spencer Smith Park – will take place on July 1st from 11 am to 8 pm in the parking lot of Burlington Centre shopping plaza.
“With the cancellation of so many community events, we are hoping to bring a little joy into the summer of 2020,” says Jay Thomblison, President of Rotary Burlington-Lakeshore.
So how will this drive-thru variation of Burlington Ribfest work? From the comfort and safety of their vehicles, locals can pull up, pay for their ribs at any of the available food vendors, which include Camp 31 BBQ, Billy Bones BBQ, Pistol Pete’s Smokehouse, and Uncle Sam’s BBQ.
If people in your car aren’t really in the mood for ribs and pulled pork, don’t worry; East Side Mario’s and Blaze Pizza will also be on hand to feed your family.
From there, attendees can either take their food to go and eat it at home, or stick around in their vehicles to enjoy live music from a whole host of local performers.
It may not be the same as the real deal, but it’s the next best thing amid a time with so much uncertainty and risk for events of all kinds. Head on over to Burlington Centre to start off the summer properly with Burlington Ribfest!
