Wind storm in Hamilton causes destruction in the city

Very strong westerly winds with gusts up to 90 km/h wreaked havoc on Hamilton today.

While hundreds experienced the thrill of tracking down (or even chasing!) their trash cans and recycling bins today, many neighbourhoods experienced serious issues like power outages and roof damage.

In fact, throughout the city thousands of homeowners experienced outages including 973 people in west Hamilton (south of Main Street West) as well as 2,457 customers between Barton Street East and King Street East (from Parkdale Avenue South to Lake Avenue North).

If you’re looking to keep tabs on power outages in your area, you can use Alectra Utilities’ power outage map.

Not to be outdone, a vacant building located at Cannon & James Street North “raised the roof” in the worst way possible — by literally having its roof lifted with portions blowing off onto the street.

Debris from the roof and crumbling brick from the structure had police section off an area that was blocked to pedestrians. For cars, the intersection remains open.

Then there’s the KFC bucket sign located at King West & Dundurn Street which also took a tumble, but not without first rolling over a taxi as it came down, smashing the windshield and rear end of the vehicle. Talk about being in the wrong place at the wrong time!

Luckily, there have been no serious injuries reported as a result of the winds; just a ton of property damage throughout the city.

If today’s weather has you confused as to where we stand in terms of Canada’s seasons, here’s a handy reference.
