Concept plan for new Dundas cemetery released

Dundas is looking toward its residents’ futures as the city considers building a new cemetery.

The proposed cemetery would be located at the former Parkside Secondary School site. The cemetery would consist of 1,697 plots – 645 standard four-foot by ten-foot plots, 800 cremation plots, and 252 Columbarium niches. The property has enough space for an additional 252 niches.

Parkside Cemetery’s current concept includes a loop road around the property, a fountain, a commemorative rock, a lookout area and a gazebo.

The concept plan will be presented to city council’s public works committee on Thursday, August 16.

If the plan for the new city-owned cemetery is green-lit, staff will have to seek all required provincial approvals. Staff will also have to fulfill planning act requirements such as zoning, the site plan and their official plan.

The current plan doesn’t take into account the various challenges that developing this property presents. If approved, issues regarding geography, vehicular access and the area’s utility corridor must be addressed.
