Hamilton faces second coyote incident this month

In the span of just under ten days, Hamilton has faced two separate incidents involving coyotes.

On October 16, a coyote attacked and killed a dog just off the Bruce Trail. The dog, a 10-year-old goldendoodle named Holly, was startled by a sudden noise and bolted off leash into the forest. It’s thought that Holly encountered at least two coyotes and was ultimately a victim of the confrontation.

The second incident occurred on October 25 when a coyote jumped onto a young boy. While the coyote didn’t bite him, it did stand on the boy’s chest for a few moments baring its teeth. The boy was able to get away unscathed before the coyote ran off.

Many Hamiltonians feel as though these two incidents are causes for concern. While public safety is in everyone’s best interest, coyote experts say that there’s no reason to suspect that there are more coyotes this year or that they’re more aggressive.

Although coyotes have been known to attack humans and pets, coyotes are naturally timid animals and will typically flee at the sight of a human. If they do approach you, the best course of action is to be as loud as possible. Wave your arms, clap your hands, and yell – the noises should scare them off.

When you’re hitting the trails this fall and taking in Hamilton’s best views, be sure to keep your eyes open, children close and dogs on leash. Always be aware of your surroundings.

Have you ever encountered a coyote? What do you think about these incidents? Let us know in the comments.
