Cardinal Heights has been reduced to rubble

It’s sad to write but Cardinal Heights is no more.

Last week, demolition crews completed the middle school’s tear down to what is now just piles of rubble.

Cardinal Heights has been closed since March 2017 after being deemed as surplus by the school board. Two months later the property was circulated to preferred agencies for 180 days.

When those groups, including the city, showed no interest in the site, trustees instructed board staff to put the property up for public sale in February.

The land was sold to Dicenzo Group on June 28, 2018 for $5,250,000 with the goal to build a series of semi-detached homes on the 4.22 acre central Mountain.

Cardinal Heights housed grades 6, 7 & 8 although the sixth-graders operated out of nearby Crestwood school as a satellite campus up until 2003 when those lands were decided to be the site of Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board’s new administrative office.

With neighbouring Pauline Johnson public school now offering JK-8, having new homes developed next door certainly makes a lot of sense for young families.

Cardinal’s hexagonal hive-like design left a lot to be desired and appeared better suited to be a Mars colony base than it did a place of education.

The middle school’s demolition is the latest development in a series of school changes on the central Mountain.

In 2014, Hill Park Secondary School closed its doors only to reopen years later as an adult learning centre.

Nearby Ridgemount Elementary school also recently converted from JK-5 to JK-8. Both Ridgemount and Pauline Johnson had to add extensions to their buildings to accommodate the middle schoolers who’d typically graduate to Cardinal Heights after grade 5.

If you went to Cardinal Heights, you may find solace in knowing that the mascot lives on as the Pauline Johnson Cardinals.
