Hamilton’s newest rec centre is now open

After two years of construction, the highly anticipated Bernie Morelli Recreation Centre opened its doors on December 17th.

The $25 million, 54,000 square-foot facility is located at 876 Cannon Street East, right across from Tim Hortons Field. Mayor Fred Eisenberger helped cut the ribbon during the opening ceremony.

The facility is named after the late Bernie Morelli, who served as Ward 3’s City Councillor for over 22 years and was a member of the Hamilton Police Services Board for nearly a decade. Bernie was passionate about building a centre for community members of all ages, with an emphasis on seniors.

The rec centre has lots of amenities to offer including dance and fitness studios, a gym, indoor walking track, a pool with a hydrotherapy area, and activity rooms for event rentals. There’s also an outdoor ice rink (to add to the city’s growing list of skating rinks) that will serve as a splash pad in the summer!

Various sports and fitness programs including adapted programs for persons with special needs or disabilities will be offered at the new facility. There will also be children’s activity programs focused around art, music, science, dance, and sports, as well as program days for adults aged 55+ which will include card games and social events. There is certainly plenty to do for residents of all ages!

While the Bernie Morelli Recreation Centre is now open for use, programming won’t start until January 7th, 2019. You can register online here.

The rec centre is a part of the Hamilton Stadium Precinct project, which also includes the integration of the existing Jimmy Thompson Memorial Pool and construction of the Bernie Custis Secondary School, set to open in the fall of 2019.

The recreation centre’s opening ceremony was attended by members of the Morelli family as well as family members of the late Coralee Secore, manager of the Pan Am Initiatives.
