No, we’re not pulling an April Fool’s prank on you. As of today, April 1st, the City of Hamilton is no longer accepting leaf and yard waste in green bins.
Residents are asked to place all leaf and yard waste, including grass clippings, in brown paper yard waste bags or in an open top reusable container (such as an empty garbage bin without a lid) marked with a ‘leaf & yard waste sticker’ for weekly collection. The city-issued green bins and blue boxes are not acceptable containers for yard waste.
The reason for the change is to keep ammonia out of its Central Composting Facility, which caused odours so strong that the city voluntarily closed the site in June 2018. The City is asking residents to make these changes to their green bin habits in an effort to re-start the facility.
So what goes into a green bin?
