Federal Government contributes $1.1M towards Ancaster Arts Centre

Hamilton Liberal MP Filomena Tassi announces that the federal government will be granting $1.1 million towards the final touches of the Ancaster Memorial Arts Centre.

This concludes the nearly 7 year fundraising campaign to bring a $24 million state of the art facility to Ancaster. This grant comes just one year after the Federal government’s initial Grant of $1.5 million in August 2018.

The Ancaster Memorial Arts Centre is set to be a great addition to the homey and beautiful city centre of Ancaster. Located on Wilson Street East, the centre is expected to offer a variety of opportunities for art, dance and theatre. The centre will be able to offer theses opportunities thanks to the multiple studios, as well as a gallery, and a studio theatre.

The centre will also be host to numerous Hamilton cultural events, including the Ancaster Film Festival and the Brott Music Festival.

Impressively, a significant portion of the funds for the building have come from the Ancaster community.  Through community fundraising, the people of Ancaster were able to smash their original goal of $3 million, now aiming to raise $5 million towards the project. Additionally, through the efforts of the city, $8 million were reallocated to the project following a loss of funding from the Provincial government .

It truly is admirable to see the municipality of Ancaster and the city of Hamilton rally around this project and the production of public facilities. However, this was not simply just a feat of the community and city putting their minds together. Through a combination of complications, the original estimation of $14 million proved to be $10 million less than the final cost. This is what led to the lobbying and eventual grants from the Federal government.

Despite numerous set backs, including an archaeological assessment of the land which cost over $1 million, the city was able to finish this 7 year fundraising project.

With the $24 million in hand, and the permits and site already being approved, a ground breaking ceremony followed by construction is set to follow in the coming weeks.
