Hamilton’s McMaster University cracks top 75 in global rankings

McMaster University is officially a top 75 university in the world. After a few years bouncing within the 76- 115 range, the school moved up five spots from 77 to 72 in this year’s Times Higher Education rankings, cracking the top 75 for the first time since 2012.

This year, only seven Canadian schools were ranked amongst the world’s top 200, with McMaster being the fourth highest among them. The University of Toronto is the highest ranked Canadian school at 18, making it the only Canadian institution to crack the top 20. McGill, UBC, the University of Montreal, the University of Alberta, and UOttawa round out the rest of the Canadian representatives in the top 200.

Canadian schools in general seemed to have a strong year, with six of Canada’s seven top 200 representatives improving on last year’s rankings. Times Higher Education’s Ellie Bothwell believes that a large part of this is due to the improving global outlook of Canadian universities, as more international students, staff, and faculty are choosing to work and study at Canadian universities. This is partially driven by America’s increasingly hostile immigration policies, which have benefitted Canadian schools. In addition to this, a number of scholars have noted escaping the Trump administration as an appealing factor about Canadian institutions.

McMaster’s jump was the most significant of the top four Canadian universities and was largely driven by the school’s teaching performance, impactful research, and improvements in research citations and industry partnerships. The school’s scores in research citations and industry support are the highest in the country and the university is one of the top schools in the world in terms of reputation. The improvement in ranking should add further prestige to the university and make it an even more desirable institution for students and staff alike, attracting more high quality individuals and thus continuing to drive the school forward.

This success comes on the heels of a number of other recent global successes for McMaster, including ranking second in the world earlier this year on an assessment of universities’ adherence to the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals, winning the 2018 Global Teaching Excellence Award, and being named Canada’s most research-intensive university two years in a row.

Times Higher Education is a well-regarded source of analysis and data on higher education institutions across the globe. Their annual rankings are widely considered to be a good barometer for excellence in academic institutions.
