3 ways to get the most out of Thanksgiving weekend in Hamilton

As people across Hamilton and the country gear up for Thanksgiving weekend, a few things are inevitable: there will be a lot of good food, there will be a lot of good times, and many of us will go to work on Tuesday morning wondering how the long weekend went by so fast.

Here is a brief guide to getting the most out of your long weekend in Hamilton; a starting point as you look for fun things to do to spice up your Thanksgiving celebrations this year.

Did you know?

Everyone knows that Canada and America celebrate Thanksgiving on different days, but did you know that the first Canadian Thanksgiving took place more than 40 years before its American counterpart? According to common knowledge, the first Thanksgiving ceremony was in 1621 when settlers arrived in Plymouth, Massachusetts but most historians refute this.

Instead, it is believed that the first Thanksgiving was actually in 1578 when Sir Martin Frobisher sailed from England to what would later become Canada and celebrated by sharing salt beef and mushy peas with his crew to give thanks for a safe voyage. Thus, the first Thanksgiving was Canadian, and Hamiltonians can enjoy their turkey secure in the knowledge that Canadian Thanksgiving is the correct Thanksgiving.

It is also important to note, however, that Indigenous peoples in North America have a long history of holding communal feasts in celebration of the fall harvest that predates European colonization.

In any case, now that we know a bit more about the history of the holiday, we can start talking about some neat things we can do to celebrate it. Our first step is thinking about our food options.

There are more Thanksgiving Dinner options than just turkey

While turkey has become synonymous with the holiday, there are plenty of other options for your Thanksgiving main course. These range from common substitutes like ham or duck, to vegetarian options or trendier, less traditional Thanksgiving meals such as lasagna with roasted squash.

Whatever your culinary leanings, you’ll be sure to find everything you need in Hamilton. You can pick out the perfect pumpkin for homemade pie at family farms such as Dyments; order fresh turkey, lamb, or ham from Fenwood Farm; or enjoy one of Hamilton’s many restaurants for a delicious dinner you don’t have to make yourself.

Use the time to enjoy the fall scenery

The long weekend gives us an excellent opportunity to relax and unwind. One of the best ways to do this is to get out and enjoy nature. Thanks to the Niagara escarpment, Hamilton has plenty of beautiful places to hike, picnic, bike, take pictures and soak in the fall colours however you’d like. Dundas Peak is a very popular, Instagram-famous local spot, but there are also sites such as Spencer Gorge and Tiffany Falls that are sure to satisfy your inner nature-lover.
