37 Hamilton utility boxes just got an artistic makeover

Hamiltonians may have noticed that the downtown core got a little more vibrant recently, and it’s all thanks to the Downtown Utility Box Public Art Project, which has transformed 37 utility boxes in Hamilton into standalone works of art.

Following a city-wide call for submissions, the City of Hamilton commissioned 37 local visual artists to create original works designed as box wraps that would be temporarily fitted on an equal number of utility boxes throughout the city.

Not only does the initiative turn usually unassuming and unnoticed pieces of the city into eye-catching works of public art, it also plays a part in proudly representing Hamilton’s burgeoning artistic and cultural identity.

In the next few months, the City of Hamilton is also promising an interactive map that will chart the locations of all 37 boxes within the city.

For now, Hamilton residents will have to take it upon themselves to adventure around the city and see if they can find each beautifully designed box on their own. Think of it like a super rewarding scavenger hunt!
