City of Hamilton urging residents to check for radon in their homes

The City of Hamilton is asking residents to be part of a research study to determine if their home is exposed to radon.

Radon is an odourless and invisible cancer-causing gas that can be found anywhere. The gas is one of the leading causes of lung cancer among non-smokers. The noble gas is an intermediate step in the decay chain as thorium and uranium decay into lead and radon is the immediate decay product of radium.

Radon can be found all over Hamilton due to the city’s history with the steel industry. The Radon Testing Study in Hamilton project is to help Hamilton Public Health figure out the radon levels in the area and in local homes.

Health Canada estimates that 1 in 20 homes in Hamilton could have radon about the minimum requirement of 200 Bq/m3 (Becquerel’s per cubic metre).

To participate in the study, residents must own a home that has a living area on the main floor or basement of the house.

Any home can have a radon problem including well-insulated new homes, old drafty homes, and homes with or without basements. Radon enters homes through the ground and is lost commonly found below the second floor.

The only way to know if you home has radon is to do a proper test. Check your eligibility for the survey by visiting the City of Hamilton website.
