Forge FC ends the fall season with a win over Cavalry FC

Hamilton’s Forge FC ended their campaign of the Canadian Premier League’s inaugural season with a 1-0 win over Cavalry FC at Tim Hortons Field last night.

The victory was the cap on an exciting season for Forge FC as they finished their fall season in the top spot of the table. However, everything could change over the weekend as there’s only two points separating first place Forge and second place Cavalry FC, who have a game in hand.

Forge sit at 37 points after 18 games and Cavalry have 35 points after 17 games. The Calgary club play their final game of the fall season on Saturday against Albertan rivals Edmonton FC.

Last night’s game between Forge and Cavalry is a preview of the 2019 CPL finals. Both teams have already booked their spots in the two-legged affair set to kick off in Hamilton next week.

The battle between the league’s two top sides has been raging most of the fall season. Just last week, Cavalry enjoyed a 2-1 win over Forge in Calgary.

The first leg of the final is a rematch of last night’s game in team and venue. Forge head coach Bobby Smyrniotis says he’s already looking onto the next match.

“The important thing we talked about today was the performance,” Smyrniotis said. “We wanted a good, complete performance. We didn’t talk so much about the result, because we always want to go out there and win and get three points, but it was important for us to get a good showing in, with this being our last game (of the regular season).”

Patience is important for Forge over the weekend as they watch Cavalry try to knock them off the top spot with a win in their final game. A win for Cavalry would mean total dominance as they finished first in the spring season already. But, heading into the finals, Forge would hope they have done enough to show a chink in the armour of Cavalry FC.

The 2019 CPL Championship Finals start on October 26th at Tim Hortons Field. Then, the second leg will be played in Calgary at ATCO Field, Spruce Meadows on November 2nd
