Hamilton schools avoid strike as provincial deal is reached

Schools in Hamilton and across Ontario are thankfully remaining open this week, after a tentative deal was reached with the province and the impending strike across school boards was averted down-to-the-wire.

Leading up to the deal, things were looking grim for public schools in Ontario; this Monday was set to be the date that could have seen close to 55,000 education workers and school board employees go on strike, resulting in the indefinite complete closure of all public schools in the HWDSB and HWCDSB.

The planned strike was to be in response to the continued reduction and outright cutting of programs, staff positions, and other valuable resources in Ontario schools.

While specific details of the deal are currently under wraps pending ratification, the Canadian Union of Public Employees has stated that the Ontario government commits to a reinvestment of roughly $20 million in the provincial public school system that will allow for the reinstatement of jobs and programs in Ontario schools.

Luckily, this affirming deal was met at the very last minute, allowing millions of Ontario students to return to class today and for business as usual to resume in Hamilton schools.
