Community group to propose Hamilton bid for 2030 Commonwealth Games

The community group Hamilton 100 are proposing the construction of three new multi-sport complexes, affordable housing and upgrades to facilities as part of a bid that could bring the 2030 Commonwealth Games to Hamilton

The group is scheduled to go before the city council’s general issues committee on Wednesday with a comprehensive plan on how to bring the games to Hamilton. The proposal includes its vision, the potential impact of the games, and details on venue and stakeholder interest. However, the Hamilton 100 group has not included any dollar figures in the document.

The city gave the go-ahead to Hamilton 100 to develop a proposal that outlines the possibility of bringing the games to the city. There have been no solid plans in making a formal bid for the games at this time.

But, deadlines are fast approaching for the city to decide whether they are serious or not about their bid. Each Canadian city interested in hosting will need to submit Part 1 of their plans to Commonwealth Games Canada by November 22nd.

The Part 1 submission will need to include a vision and financial plan. Exactly how much it costs to host the games varies, with Glasgow, Scotland spending an estimated $300 million back in 2014 and the cost of the 2022 games in Birmingham, England is expected to reach $1.8 billion.

The CEO of Commonwealth Games Canada has told Hamilton city councillors the price tag could run around $1.5 billion for the 2030 games.

Hamilton 100 are proposing that the city build three new sports complexes that are within the 10 year sport development plan. The buildings would range in size with the smallest around 63,000 square feet and the largest being around 98,000 square feet. Each complex would provide multi-sport possibilities after the games. There has been no decided locations.

FirstOntario Place already meets the requirements of the Commonwealth Games. The proposed replacement venue would also meet these requirements.

The group will also propose updates to the Mohawk Sports park, new tennis courts in Gage Park, new swimming pools at McMaster University, basketball court upgrades in Eastwood Park and a new glass beach volleyball pavilion in Confederation Park.

A massive overhaul of Bayfront Park would be required with the addition of two islands connected by bridges that would reshape the park. The group says the improved water flow would address the algae issue in the waters.

Hamilton 100 says it will be the city’s opportunity to build affordable housing and support a green and sustainable community with the construction of residences on the east end and in the downtown core. If Hamilton is selected to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games it will be a special 100 year anniversary for the city as they were the first host of the games back in 1930.
