Daylight Saving Time ends on Sunday in Hamilton

Hamiltonians will get a chance to catch up with some extra sleep this weekend, as the clocks turn back an hour for the end of Daylight Saving Time.

The time change will happen at 2 am on Sunday November 3rd, when clocks will change to 1 am. Moving forward, the shift means that it will be brighter earlier in the morning and darker earlier in the evening.

Just a few years ago, Daylight Saving meant that we would have to remember to manually change our clocks or risk being late for everything the next day. Luckily, most people’s devices will reset automatically and our alarms will wake us up at the correct times.

While the idea of an extra hour sounds appealing, sleep specialists warn that the time change might actually be harmful in some ways. Despite the golden opportunity to get a free hour of extra sleep, many people end up compensating by staying up later than they usually would, and miss out on the benefits of extra sleep.

Research has also shown that the time changes can often be disruptive to the body’s circadian rhythm, which can sometimes have far-ranging health implications. One study found that the risk of a heart attack went up 25% on the Monday after Daylight Saving Time versus every other Monday of the year.

While it’s extremely rare for the disruption to be so severe, it’s not uncommon for people to experience a ‘jet-lag’ sort of feeling for a few days after the time change, as their bodies catch up to the changed time cycle around them. It’s very similar to the experience of having to adjust when travelling across time zones.

Recent years have seen more of a push to scrap Daylight Saving Time altogether. Many countries and communities around the world don’t change their clocks with the seasons, and a lot of the historical reasons for implementing the practice in the first place aren’t as relevant anymore.

The next Daylight Saving Time beings March 8th, 2020, when clocks will jump an hour forward.
