Doug Ford faces backlash for comments about Hamilton

Ontario Premier Doug Ford is under fire after making some less-than-positive comments about Hamilton during a question period yesterday.

“Hamilton has been ignored. It has been run by the NDP – the socialists – who destroyed the city for years,” said Ford in response to a question about economic activity asked by Hamilton’s Conservative MPP, Donna Skelly. Premier Ford then praised and credited MPP Skelly and his own Conservative provincial government for Hamilton’s improving economy.

Ford claimed that the NDP “ran 300,000 manufacturing jobs” out of Ontario, and that his government is “creating 272,000 new manufacturing jobs.”

Ford’s comments rubbed many in Hamilton the wrong way entirely, with plenty of backlash on social media from vocal critics who question Ford’s knowledge of what Hamilton is really like.

One of those critics was NDP leader and Hamilton MPP Andrea Horwath, who called out Ford’s ignorance about the city. “I think Hamilton’s a great city, and I guess the Premier’s got to wake up and have a look at how great it really is,” said Horwath.

It’s quite clear that Premier Ford didn’t earn any new Hamilton fans with the widely-publicized remarks.
