Forge FC get a boost as star goalscorer returns for second leg of CPL final

The first leg of the Canadian Premier League final saw a dramatic affair between two heated rivals. Forge FC and Cavalry FC players both received a red card in Hamilton last Saturday with star players suspended for the final game of the CPL final.

After both teams appealed each of the red cards, it’s Forge who will go into the final game with their star forward Tristan Borges. The disciplinary committee reprieved the red card issued to Borges last Saturday making the league’s top scorer available for the game in Calgary on Saturday.

Cavalry also appealed the red card issued to defender Joel Waterman. However, the Canadian Soccer disciplinary committee says the red card will stand, with Waterman remaining suspended for the second leg.

Waterman was sent off for handling the ball in the box late in the first half. The committee says that the trailing hand of Waterman was a handball offence and prevented a “goal or obvious and clear goal scoring opportunity.”

The Cavalry goalkeeper played the hero as he saved the resulting penalty taken by Borges. But, the jubilation didn’t last long as Borges’ shot from just inside the area gave the lead to Forge a few minutes later.

Borges was then sent off in the 62-minute as he kicked out after a tussle with a Cavalry player Jay Wheeldon. The disciplinary committee ruled that Borges “did not use excessive force or brutality against his opponent and therefore did not meet the threshold of a violent conduct offence.”

With their star goalscorer back for the second leg, Forge will hope to continue their attacking dominance over Cavalry at Spruce Meadows on Saturday November 2nd at 3:30 pm

The second leg of the inaugural CPL final will be the dramatic finale to a burgeoning rivalry between Forge and Cavalry to see which side will lift the North Star Shield.
