Hamilton city council backs review of Commonwealth Games bid

The Commonwealth Games, an event which first began in 1930 in Hamilton, Ontario, has been proposed to return to the city on the 100 year anniversary.

A bid has been submitted for the city of Hamilton to host yet again, though the event is much more complicated than it was in the 30’s.

Council has asked for a peer review to be conducted on the city of Hamilton and its capacity to host these games.

Obviously, the financial requirements of hosting such a massive event are immense. Although the costs are typically split between the federal, provincial, and municipal governments, it’s still a matter of how much the city of Hamilton can really afford to pay.

The benefits of the Commonwealth Games including tourism, new facilities, social transformation, and overall economic benefit are immense.

The city of Hamilton is in the midst of a golden age for its sports.

McMaster varsity sports have brought the city a National Championship in their Women’s Basketball program. The football program has recently brought home the Yates Cup. The Cross Country team has finished 2nd in Canada, with three top 10 finishers in the U Sports race.

Not only that, but Forge FC has won the inaugural Canadian Premier League championship, the Hamilton Tiger Cats have set a franchise record for wins and are in the hunt for the Grey Cup.

One thing about Hamiltonians is that we love our sports. If there was any time for the provincial government and the city of Hamilton to push this opportunity, it would be now.

Mayor Fred Eisenberger has stated that he believes the Games would be a “win-win” for the city; it’s just a matter of what the financial ramifications turn out to be.
