Hamilton typographer reanimates old-time horror radio scripts in unique book

Spoken old-time radio is back from the dead. Hamilton-based typographer Frank Lawrence has reimagined some of the most famous horror scripts from old-time radio programs into his newest book boomDEAD: A Killer Collection of Old-Time Radio’s Most Unusually Haunted Scripts of Horror, Mystery and Suspense.

The book takes 12 of the scariest and best-remembered episodes of old-time radio, and displays the script in a way that mimics the subject matter. The creativity of the typography makes each story a unique experience for the reader.

Lawrence released the book through Hamilton-based publisher Pallor Publishing as a non-profit project with proceeds being donated to independent bookstores and old-time radio initiatives.

The official launch of boomDEAD will be on November 30th at One Duke Restaurant and on December 1st at The Casbah in Hamilton. The event is open to everyone, and just might help inspire another generation to appreciate the wonder of old-time radio.

The launch will be followed by a larger community event at the Westdale Cinema in February. The free event will be an immersive listening experience as they play some of the original radio programs that are featured in the book.

boomDEAD is already available at bookstores throughout Hamilton including James Street Bookseller, Epic Books, J.H. Gordon Books, The City and The City Books and Westside Stories. Pallor Publishing is looking to get the book into more stores in Southern Ontario as well as available for sale online before the official launch.
