Hamilton will see up to 30cm of major snowfall today

The fleeting fall foliage is getting overtaken by winter’s chill a little early this year, as Hamilton is seeing a sudden and sizeable snowfall that’s expected to really pile up by the end of the day.

In a weather warning issued by Environment Canada on Sunday, Hamilton and Niagara are expected to get some of the worst of the weather hitting Southwestern Ontario all day today.

Persistent snowfall through all of Monday is expected to reach anywhere from 15 centimetres to a potential whopping 30 centimetres by late this evening, affecting commutes at all times of day.

The thick snow began populating the roads early Monday morning in Hamilton, kicking off the new workweek by creating some less-than-ideal driving conditions for early commuters. The roads and sidewalks aren’t expected to get any better throughout the day as consistent snowfall continues, likely making the commute home after work this afternoon even worse.

Despite the sudden burst of nasty weather, it’s not quite enough to warrant a Snow Day; public schools in the HWDSB and HWCDSB are open for business as usual, with buses up and running as well.

Hamiltonians would be wise to grab their gloves, have snow shovels on standby, and take caution on the roads if you absolutely have to drive anywhere today. Stay safe out there, Hamilton!
