The City of Hamilton will be providing $128K in emergency funding to keep two women’s shelters open

The city will be giving $128,000 of emergency funding to ensure that two women’s shelters remain open.

Hamilton city council voted on Wednesday morning to provide funding that would prevent Carol Anne’s Place and Willow’s Place from closing this winter. The last-minute cash injection should be enough to ensure the two YMCA projects will be able to continue getting women indoors during the cold weather.

Carol Anne’s Place is a daytime drop-in shelter and Willow’s Place is an overflow shelter for women who are homeless.

The shelters don’t currently have an ongoing source of income and without the funding they would not be able to remain open.

Ward 3 councillor Nrinder Nann said the city had no choice but to step up with the money.

“Our shelter system is overflowing,” she said, “and women specifically are being turned away in our colder months.”

Carol Anne’s Place provides about 260 women with a safe and warm place to relax during the colder months. It also provides access to withdrawal management service, meals, shelter placement and winter clothing.

Willow’s Place is partnered with St. Joseph’s Health Care – Womankind and Woman Services. They receive funding support from Out of the Cold and the Local Health Integration Network. However, the Local Health Integration Network is in a state of transition as they wait for a new system to be rolled out by the provincial government.
