Hamilton is quickly becoming one of Canada’s best tech industry hubs

A number of Canada’s cities have seen major growth in their tech industries recently. One of the cities to have seen some particularly intense growth is Hamilton.

CBRE Research recently analyzed 20 of Canada’s leading cities and assessed the tech industries in each market. Their report looked at factors such as the availability and quality of skilled tech workers, operating costs, and cities’ attractiveness to potential tech employees and employers. The study found that, overall, Canada’s tech sector continues to flourish, with markets of all sizes seeing significant growth and a notably rapid growth right here in Hamilton.

Canada’s tech industry is still, naturally, dominated by our largest cities. Toronto leads the way with 54% growth in tech jobs between 2013 and 2018, a rate that far outpaces any other city in Canada. Ottawa, Vancouver, Waterloo Region, and Montreal round out the rest of Canada’s top five most tech industry-friendly cities.

Despite the continued dominance of Canada’s major tech markets, our small and mid-sized markets are picking up major momentum.

As the country’s biggest tech hubs continue to become more globally competitive, the fights for office space and employment get more fierce. This creates opportunities for smaller markets, as they can offer tech firms greater office space availability, operational cost savings, and untapped talent pools.

Hamilton has taken advantage of this opportunity and emerged as the fastest growing mid-sized tech market in the country. This strong growth rate is largely influenced by the quality of the city’s talent, which allows the city to punch above its weight class and hold its own against cities with larger labour forces.

Not only does Hamilton’s tech industry have a high quality work force, but a growing one as well.  The city continues to attract a growing number of tech workers and people with university degrees in tech-related fields. Hamilton even saw the opening of a brand new collaborative work space and tech innovation hub this year. This combination has allowed the city to sustain industry growth and continue to climb the CBRE rankings.
