One of Hamilton’s hottest pockets for night life and entertainment is getting a special new feature very soon.
Dubbed the King William Street Beacon and Gate Public Art Project, the City of Hamilton will be installing a special gate feature on King William Street, used to temporarily close off the strip to traffic for special events such as festivals and street parties.
Best of all, in keeping with the city’s prideful identity as an arts and culture hub, the project is using its platform to commission a local artist to create a design that turns an otherwise utilitarian retractable gate into a permanent work of public street art. Interested local artists and artist-led teams can submit themselves and their proposals for consideration to design the gate.
Very excited about this one! Our latest call for #artists is now out. It’s for a new permanent art work for King William St. that incorporates a gate feature that can temporarily close the street to traffic for special events. Details at https://t.co/wQiIhJDdRn pic.twitter.com/J5wk5MUcOs

King William Street, home to Hamilton’s famed restaurant row as well as entertainment options like Theatre Aquarius, is one of the city’s biggest culinary and cultural draws for locals and visiting out-of-towners alike. In many ways, it’s the ideal spot for this exciting public art project; one that helps announce Hamilton as a singular city with a singular cultural identity.
