Hamilton confirms its first death related to COVID-19

Hamilton Public Health said Tuesday afternoon that an 80-year old who lived at the Heritage Green Nursing Home in Stoney Creek has died. This marks the first death in Hamilton that’s connected to COVID-19.
The woman passed away at St. Joseph’s Hospital this morning, where she had been in isolation since March 16th, when she came to the hospital for a scheduled treatment.
While she was there, she began displaying symptoms of COVID-19 and tested positive on March 18th.

Since then, a 55-year-old female who also resides at Heritage Green tested positive for COVID-19, which prompted Hamilton Public Health Services to declare an outbreak of coronavirus at the long-term care home. The 55-year-old woman was not hospitalized and remains in isolation at the nursing home.
“I offer my sincere condolences to the family of the woman who passed away,” said Dr. Elizabeth Richardson, Hamilton’s medical officer of health. “Unfortunately, this tragic news highlights why we need to take this virus very seriously and continue to take collective actions to stay at home and stay safe.”
As of noon Tuesday, Hamilton had 35 confirmed cases of the new coronavirus.
