Starlite Drive-in revokes announcement that they’d reopen during COVID-19

An announcement yesterday from Starlite Drive-In Movie Theatre that they would be open for business during COVID-19 turned out to be short-lived, as the news was quickly revoked later the same day.

At first, having an escapist Hamilton institution like Starlite open during this pandemic seemed to make sense. After all, guests at the drive-in don’t even really have to leave their vehicles to check out a movie, meaning that a solid level of physical distance can still be maintained between patrons.

On top of that, Starlite had announced plans to maintain a safer environment during COVID-19, including increased sanitation measures and limits on concession and washroom access.

That said, with the fact that some vulnerable person-to-person contact is still possible at various points at the drive-in, there’s just too much risk at public gatherings of any kind at the current moment.

“We have been in contact with local public health officials throughout this situation and have consistently followed their recommendations,” explains Starlite Drive-In in a post on Facebook, adding that they will be remaining voluntarily closed for the foreseeable future.

“At the Starlite Drive-In we have always been committed to providing (a) safe environment for our customers and employees. We are sorry to those who were hoping to come out this weekend and would appreciate your understanding during these difficult times.”
