Hamilton actor Nick Cordero has right leg amputated due to COVID-19 complications

In the midst of an intense, weeks-long battle in hospital with multiple complications from COVID-19, Hamilton native and Broadway actor Nick Cordero had his right leg amputated on Saturday night after repeated unsuccessful attempts to restore blood flow to the leg.

The news was shared in one of many recent updates on Cordero’s status provided via Instagram by his wife, fitness trainer Amanda Kloots, who recently provided another update that Cordero’s surgery was a success and that he is recovering well in hospital.

Cordero was originally admitted to the ICU at Cedars-Sinai Hospital in Los Angeles on March 31st with trouble breathing, and was misdiagnosed with pneumonia twice after two separate COVID-19 tests came back negative. However, a third test showed that Cordero did in fact test positive for the novel coronavirus.

By that time, Cordero’s condition had continued to worsen and he had been placed in a medically-induced coma. The Hamilton-born 41 year-old was given a ventilator, then later placed on an ECMO machine to circulate and oxygenate his blood outside of his body when an infection in his lung developed and caused his blood pressure to drop and heart to stop.

Cordero then experienced blood clots in his right leg that halted blood flow, which doctors attempted to address with blood thinners. However, when those blood thinners ended up causing internal bleeding instead, Cordero was taken off of them and amputation was deemed the only remaining option.

The outpouring of community support during this ordeal has been overwhelming, with family, friends, fans, and total strangers around the world offering solidarity and sending well wishes.

Not only that, but a GoFundMe was started to raise funds in support of Cordero, Kloots, and their 10 month-old son Elvis; funds which will help pay for hospital bills as well as the expense of making their new mid-renovation house wheelchair accessible.

As of Monday morning, the GoFundMe has already raised over $363,000 with more donations pouring in by the minute. Donations can be made here.
