Hamilton actor Nick Cordero is in critical condition with COVID-19

Hamilton-born stage and screen actor Nick Cordero is in critical condition at a hospital in Los Angeles due to complications from COVID-19.

Cordero was initially admitted to hospital and misdiagnosed with pneumonia after two COVID-19 tests came up negative, but a third test eventually confirmed that the 41 year-old Hamilton native is positive for the novel coronavirus. At the time of the diagnosis, Coredo was already placed on a ventilator.

As he fights for his life in the intensive care ward at Cedars-Sinai Hospital in Los Angeles, updates on Cordero’s condition have been provided regularly via Instagram by his wife, fitness trainer Amanda Kloots.

This past Friday, Kloots revealed that an infection has developed on Cordero’s lung, causing a fever spike, a blood pressure drop, and an irregular heartbeat that eventually lead to his heart stopping completely. Cordero was resuscitated and put on an ECMO machine, which pumps and oxygenates a patient’s blood outside their body and allows their organs to rest.

Then, as the weekend progressed, Cordero was also put on a dialysis machine to assist with kidney function, and had to be rushed to an emergency surgery to restore blood flow to his right leg.

As is clear from the ongoing outpouring on Kloots’ Instagram page, dozens of family, friends, fans, and total strangers from far and wide are pulling for Cordero to keep fighting.

A graduate of Hamilton’s Westdale Secondary School and an alumnus of the Theatre Aquarius performing arts program, Cordero has since made a major splash on Broadway stages in leading and featured roles in shows like Waitress, A Bronx Tale, and Bullets Over Broadway; the latter of which earned him a Tony Award nomination.
