Hamilton starts to plan how it will reopen during COVID-19

As Ontario releases a province-wide blueprint of how it will gradually reopen the economy when the time and conditions are right, the City of Hamilton is also starting to map out how things could return to normal

The Emergency Operations Centre has formed a group partnered with health officials that will look at how to use the province’s framework for reopening to see how similar steps can be followed locally in Hamilton. The group met for the first time on Monday to look at plans for how to slowly reopen businesses and relax social distancing measures.

Mayor Fred Eisenberger stressed that the gradual reopening of cities will look different for each municipality, dependent on the differing needs and conditions of all separate communities.

The province’s framework wasn’t specific to the type of businesses and public spaces that will reopen first, but they did reveal the plan for relaxing some of the restrictions.

In the province’s reopening plan, there are three stages within the framework, with two to four weeks between each stage. Each phase of reopening will be closely monitored for success before the next phase is initiated. Live events with large gatherings including concerts, theatre, and sporting events were at the bottom of the pile, with no immediate plan on how to start those events again in the near future.

While most locals are doing their part to obey social distancing orders and help slow the spread of COVID-19, Hamilton has also been struggling a bit with some residents not following the strict guidelines; trips to waterfalls and closed-off conservation areas continue to be a problem for public gatherings. The city has been ticketing people who are not abiding by the guidelines.

Although providing plans on local and provincial levels is a promising start to recovery, Premier Doug Ford said that the framework released is more like a road map than a calendar, and it could still be a few weeks before things start to reopen. No firm dates have been given yet.
