Four employees at Mondelez candy factory in Hamilton test positive for COVID-19

In some less-than-sweet news, candy manufacturing giant Mondelez Canada has temporarily and indefinitely shut down its Hamilton plant as four of its employees were found to test positive for COVID-19.

The internationally-known confectionary makers, who manufacture everything from Sour Patch Kids to Toblerone Bars, operate a factory in West Hamilton on Ewen Road, steps away from McMaster University.

According to a spokesperson for Mondelez, three of the plant’s workers tested positive for coronavirus last week, and a fourth was found to test positive this past Sunday. The positive employees are all now self-isolating at home as they recover from the virus.

When the first cases were discovered, the Hamilton factory acted quickly and launched both a contact tracing investigation and a deep cleaning & sanitation procedure, halting operations and closing the plant until further notice.

The closure means that the plant’s 350 employees are temporarily laid off, but Mondelez Canada has said it is continuing to pay the employees until they are able to return to work.

Prior to the confirmed cases, Mondelez Canada had already instated multiple health and safety measures at the Hamilton plant, including increased sanitation of the facility, providing and mandating masks for all workers and visitors, performing temperature screenings, and implementing physical barriers in certain areas of the building.

The factory remains closed until further notice.
