Hamilton school employees can be voluntarily redeployed to other community services

School employees across Ontario who are not participating in distance learning can voluntarily ask to be redeployed to a different community service that is experiencing staff shortages amid the coronavirus outbreak.

The emergency order was announced by Premier Doug Ford over the weekend. It looks to place extra workers in locations like hospitals, long-term care homes, retirement homes, and women’s shelters that are understaffed during the pandemic.

Schools remain closed in Ontario until at least May 31st with distance learning in effect since the end of March.

“Our priority continues to be protecting our most vulnerable citizens and the dedicated staff that care for them during the COVID-19 outbreak,” Premier Doug Ford said in a statement.

“Many of our long-term care homes and shelters are short of staff, so I am encouraging any available educational workers to help out if you can, because you can make a real difference in the lives of those most in need.”

Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board has been authorized to develop and implement a redeployment plan. Employees who volunteer to be redeployed will retain their position with the board and continue to receive their salary and benefits. They will also be eligible for the province’s emergency pay and child care.

The Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario (ETFO) has expressed support for the program recognizing the unique requirements of the community during an unprecedented time.

ETFO has also worked to ensure that all employees who have volunteered for the program receive the essential training required for the workplace. And they stated that the opportunity is completely voluntary and participants can opt out at any time without any reprisal or consequence.
