Here’s a list of businesses that are reopening in Hamilton today

As the province starts begins phase one of reopening the economy, select Hamilton businesses can fully reopen today after being closed for weeks due to the COVID-19 shutdown.

Premier Doug Ford revealed plans last week that showed how the province can start to reopen after a lockdown was put in place amid an Ontario-wide state of emergency.

Although some retailers were given the green light to offer curb-side pickup and delivery, this next phase will allow customers inside of storefronts with a street-facing entrance as long as they are following public health guidelines.

Over the long weekend, a number of seasonal recreational facilities opened including golf courses, marinas, and private parks.

After this stage of reopening, cases of COVID-19 need to continue on a downward trend in order for the province to move into the next phase. This is despite Ontario health officials stating that the number of community spread cases is still unclear.

Here’s a list of the types of businesses that are permitted to reopen as of today.

  • All construction and essential workplace limits have been lifted.
  • All retail stores with street access can open with limited capacity.
  • Vehicle dealerships and retailers
  • Media offices that do not have equipment that allows for working from home.
  • Non-emergency diagnostic imaging and surgeries in public hospitals, private hospitals, and independent health facilities, clinics, and private practices as long as they can meet pre-conditions.
  • Certain health and medical services such as in-person counselling and scheduled surgeries.
  • Libraries for pick-up and delivery only
  • Outdoor recreational amenities such as marinas
  • Outdoor sports recreational facilities for sports that are not played in teams such as tennis courts, cycling tracks, horse riding facilities, and golf ranges.
  • Professional and amateur sport activity for individual or single competitors.
  • Professional services related to conducting research and experimental development.
  • All emissions inspection facilities for heavy diesel motor vehicles.
  • Veterinary and other pet services by appointment.
  • Private households can again employee workers on their premises in activities primarily concerned with the operation of the household, such as cleaning and maintenance
  • General maintenance and repair services

All of these reopening businesses come after Hamilton experienced a massive jump in cases over the weekend with the city’s health officials announcing a further 65 residents testing positive. The Rosslyn Retirement Residence is the source of the biggest outbreaks in the city with 52 residents from the home being moved to the hospital. As of Monday, the home has 83 confirmed COVID-19 cases.
