Ontario has extended all emergency orders to June 9th

As the province continues to assess the ongoing impact of the COVID-19 announcement, Premier Doug Ford has announced that the province’s emergency orders and closures have been extended to June 9th at the earliest.

A statement issued this morning by the provincial government explains that all emergency orders currently instated – including those involving the limited size of gatherings and the closure of businesses and services – will remain in place until at least June 9th; a deadline which is, of course, subject to change as the province continues to monitor the spread of the novel coronavirus.

“Current emergency orders include the closure of outdoor playgrounds, play structures and equipment, public swimming pools and outdoor water facilities, as well as bars and restaurants except for takeout and delivery,” reads the Province of Ontario’s official statement.

“Additionally, there continues to be restrictions on social gatherings of more than five people, and staff redeployment rules remain in place for long-term care homes and congregate settings like retirement homes and women’s shelters.”

The news comes shortly after Ontario initiated its first phase of a three-phase plan to reopen the economy province-wide in a cautious, calculated manner. Ontario has also been seeing a concerning increase in new daily confirmed cases of COVID-19, reaching numbers higher than the province had seen for two weeks prior.

The last few days have also shown a number of documented instances in which large groups of people have ignored proper social distancing and public health guidelines; most notably, in the blatantly irresponsible mass gathering of thousands that occurred this past weekend at Toronto’s Trinity Bellwoods Park.

Premier Ford expresses that it is still deeply important for Ontarians to stay the course amid this global pandemic.

“To build on the progress we have made to contain COVID-19, people should continue to follow these simple public health guidelines, practise physical distancing, wear a mask when it is a challenge to physical distance, and wash their hands regularly,” said Ford.

“If you think you have COVID-19 or may have been exposed to the virus, go to an assessment centre and get tested. Please stay safe.”
