Ontario sees its highest increase in confirmed COVID-19 cases in 2 weeks

Ontario saw 441 new confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the province on Friday; the largest one-day increase in two weeks.

The new confirmed cases on Friday brought the overall provincial total to 24,628, with just over three quarters of those cases – or 18,767 – considered resolved. Cases had also been trending upwards in Ontario for 10 days prior, with Friday’s increase being the largest in the province since May 8th.

On Saturday, the province reported a slightly smaller, albeit still concerning, number of 412 new confirmed cases as well, bringing the current overall total to 25,040.

The news comes at the end of a week that also saw the Ford government initiate Phase One of its provincial reopening plan, relaxing restrictions on some businesses, services, and recreational amenities; a controversial move that had many wondering if this first phase was being put into action too soon.

There has certainly been an increase in risky behaviour among some Ontarians as some of these early restrictions relax; particularly as the weather starts to improve and some in the province make the decision to violate emergency orders by ignoring proper distance in crowded areas or gathering with friends and family.

But beware: getting too casual too early could potentially result in major setbacks, with lockdown measures tightened up again if the province continues trending upwards in its confirmed cases.

While Ford hasn’t given a firm answer either way regarding the reinstatement of emergency shutdowns, he has also expressed that he believes Ontarians will continue doing their part in mitigating the spread of coronavirus.

“I’m so grateful for everyone listening, and businesses stepping up to the plate,” said Ford. “We’re seeing some peaks and valleys, but hopefully we’re going to see the trend go down.”
