Some Hamilton retail stores have reopened today

Stores across Hamilton are allowed to reopen as of Monday for curbside pick up and delivery after the city’s positive coronavirus cases have slowed down for the first time in six weeks.

The Ontario government has been releasing guidelines for safely reopening the province after introducing its three-phase reopening plan. Bringing back select retail spaces is a move to start repairing the economy after an unprecedented number of job losses in March and April.

Retail stores with a street entrance will be able to provide curbside pick up and delivery. This is a move that Premier Doug Ford said would bring thousands of people back to work.

Mother’s Day weekend saw the first wave of stores reopening. Garden centres and nurseries were able to open on Friday with hardware stores able to open on Saturday.

According to data released by Statistics Canada last week, almost 700,000 people lost their jobs in April in addition to the about 400,000 that lost their jobs in March.

The total number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in Ontario currently sits at 20,238 with a death toll of 1,634. In Hamilton, there have been 488 confirmed cases with a death toll of 23.

Premier Ford also announced over the weekend that over 500 provincial parks and conservation reserves will be reopening on Monday with social distancing guidelines in place. However, areas such as playgrounds, beaches, and campsites will all remain closed.
