Multiple London party-goers test positive for COVID-19, with possible spread to Hamilton

Multiple attendees at a large party in London, Ontario have tested positive for COVID-19; and some of them may have spread the virus at subsequent gatherings in Hamilton.

The party was a backyard event in the middle of June that was in direct violation of the current province-wide rules surrounding social gatherings, with around 25 people present that didn’t adhere to physical distancing measures.

The first two attendees tested positive for COVID-19 on June 24th, a number of days after the party took place. Six more cases linked to the same party have emerged since, which includes two that were reported at the beginning of this week.

Health officials used contact tracing to identify other locations and people who may have been exposed to COVID-19 as a result of the party, finding that some of the attendees who tested positive have also attended other gatherings in and out of London, including at least one event in Hamilton and in Waterloo.

The incident highlights why it’s more important than ever to adhere to provincial guidelines regarding COVID-19; particularly as most of Ontario has advanced to Phase Two of reopening, which may be encouraging lax behaviour in some communities.

Ontarians are reminded to stay home as much as possible, limit social gatherings to no more than 10 people at once, and to maintain at least two metres of physical distancing with those outside of their social circles.

Masks or face coverings should be worn in public spaces, and frequent, thorough hand washing with soap or hand sanitizer should continue to be observed.

Hamilton’s total number of confirmed and probable COVID-19 cases is as 842, with 737 of that number considered resolved and 44 deaths.
