Pride Hamilton filed a $600k claim against the Hamilton Police Service and the city

Hamilton Pride posted a statement that says the organization responsible for Pride festivities in the city filed an application against the Hamilton Police Service and City of Hamilton with the Human Rights Tribunal of Ontario.

The application was sent on June 12th and cites that the police service discriminated against the organization on the basis of sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression during the incidents that occurred at Pride 2019.

Action taken by Pride Hamilton follows up to the release of the independent review of the events before, during, and after Pride 2019 that was released to the public on June 8th, 2020.

Pride Hamilton is arguing that the Hamilton Police Service exhibited discrimination toward the LGBTQIA+ community through their failure to properly plan, protect, and respond to threats that took place by groups during the festival last year.

As well, the organization says the Hamilton Police Services Board and Mayor Fred Eisenberger have made public comments defending the police service’s efforts of preparation and response.

The application to the Human Rights Tribunal of Ontario was submitted within the year required to report alleged injustices in regard to human rights of an individual or group.

In the claim, Pride Hamilton are asking for damages of $600,000 to be allocated to local support initiatives, programs, and organizations in Hamilton’s Two-Spirit and LGBTQIA+ communities.
