All Hamilton library branches have reopened for public access

Bookworms, rejoice! As the city finds itself freshly in stage three of reopening, the Hamilton Public Library (HPL) is officially reopening all local branches to public access; albeit, with increased safety measures in place as the COVID-19 pandemic continues to be a threat.

As of July 30th, the Hamilton Public Library has reopened all 22 branches in their network for browsing, pickup for held materials, and computer usage. The branches will operate with adjusted hours: Tuesday to Thursday from 11 am to 7 pm, and Friday to Saturday from 11 am to 5 pm.

“We’re moving to Phase 3 because of the collective work of people in our community. We’re excited to welcome back all Hamilton Public Library members. All branches have increased cleaning and new services,” says Paul Takala, CEO and Chief Librarian of the Hamilton Public Library.

“It’s truly an example of Hamilton’s resilience that we’re rounding the bend. Let’s continue to make good progress by working together to reopen slowly and safely.”

Naturally, with the reopening comes some strict health & safety measures put in place for the foreseeable future.

All visitors to the library will be required to have a valid HPL library card to aid in contact tracing. Additionally, in accordance with the new municipal bylaw, visitors must be wearing masks or face coverings while inside any library branch. Physical distancing and enhanced sanitation measures will also be in place.

When any library materials are returned to a branch, those materials will be quarantined for 72 hours before they’re returned to the shelves and made available for borrowing again.
