BREAKING: Hamilton health board votes to make masks mandatory in public spaces

In a Hamilton city council meeting on Friday afternoon, the city’s board of health voted 13-2 in favour of making face masks and coverings mandatory for Hamilton residents visiting indoor public spaces during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Hamilton follows other neighbouring municipalities like Toronto in the move to make masks mandatory; a measure which public health has said is very effective in limiting the ongoing spread of COVID-19, especially as the local economy reopens and society begins to return to an adjusted version of normality.

Council will still have to ratify the bylaw on July 17th, where it will be voted on by the same group of city officials. Once this happens, the mandatory mask bylaw will officially go into effect beginning July 20th.

The bylaw means that anybody entering public spaces such as retail stores, service centres, art galleries, supermarkets, libraries, museums, public transit, and places of worship, will be required to wear a face mask or covering, even if it’s not medical-grade.

Exceptions would be made for those with prohibitive medical conditions, as well as children under the age of two.

Those who do not comply can be denied service or entry in applicable public spaces, and will be subject to a $200 fine.
