CFL talking about Hamilton and Burlington as hub cities for the 2020 season

Hamilton and Burlington have been discussed as hub cities for the CFL to complete the 2020 season, says Ontario Sport Minister Lisa MacLoed.

While the CFL continues to determine how to start next season amid the current pandemic, MacLoed told reporters on Tuesday that the two cities have been mentioned during conversations with the government.

CFL Commissioner Randy Ambroise said the soonest the season could begin in the current situation would be September.

Using hub cities would require teams to play most of their games in the Hamilton and Burlington area in order to safely complete the 2020 season while physical distancing regulations are in place.

A similar proposal was put forward to bring back the NBA in order to complete the 2019/20 season. The remainder of the competition is going to be played in a condensed format at Walt Disney World to keep players and staff contained to one area.

Sports around the world are continuing to return with condensed competitions. Soccer in Europe has been played in front of empty stadiums for the last few weeks in order to complete competitions that were paused due to the coronavirus.

It’s likely the CFL will have to follow a similar format as other professional sports leagues as large gatherings at public events are still banned for the foreseeable future.

For the CFL to play the 2020 season with Hamilton and Burlington as hub cities it would likely require an agreement with city councillors and local venues before moving forward.

MacLeod also said that completely cancelling the 2020 season wasn’t off the table yet either.
